FaqQuestions to ask a Pediatrics & Neonatology

Pediatrics is a branch of medicine that deals with diseases that affect infants, kids, and teenagers. Neonatology is a branch of paediatrics that deals with the treatment of newborn infants, particularly those who are sick or are born prematurely.

The average pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. Premature or pre-term birth refers to the birth of a child before the 37th week.

If your baby weighs less than 2.5kg at birth, their head may appear to be a lot bigger than the rest of their body. They may look thin with little body fat. Babies of low birth weight or those who are born prematurely, may need to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) .

The infant may experience difficulty latching onto the nipple, and may fall asleep during feedings. They may also have a shallow latch, which can lead to receiving insufficient milk. The infant may pull away from the breast while being fed, and not appear full after feedings. Baby’s weight gain may be gradual, and the mother may experience cracked or sore nipples and painful breastfeeding. The infant may also whine and cry while being fed, and there may be decreased milk production.

Poor weight gain in babies is when they are not gaining enough weight or are losing weight. Generally, the standard rate of weight gain for a full-term baby is approximately 30g per day in the first few weeks, increasing to 60–90g per day by the end of the first month. If a baby is not gaining weight at this rate, it is considered poor weight gain and should be discussed with a doctor.
