Robotic Knee Replacement vs Conventional Knee Replacement What's the Difference

Robotic Knee Replacement vs Conventional Knee Replacement: What’s the Difference?

Medically reviewed by: Dr. Sathish Devadoss – M.B.B.S., M.S. (Ortho), M.Ch. Orth (UK), FASIF (Aust) Knee replacement surgery has come a long way, and robotic assistance is one of the newer developments in the field. But does robotic surgery always mean better results? Not necessarily. Both robotic assisted and conventional knee replacement aim to relieve pain, improve movement and help people get back to their daily activities. The main difference lies in how the surgeon plans and performs the procedure. Understanding this can help patients have a more informed discussion with their orthopaedic specialist. What Is Conventional Knee Replacement? In conventional knee replacement, the surgeon removes damaged cartilage and bone from the knee joint and replaces them with artificial components. Surgical instruments and preoperative scans or X-rays help the surgeon plan the procedure and position the implants. The aim is to reduce pain caused by conditions such as advanced osteoarthritis, especially when medicines, physiotherapy and other non-surgical treatments no longer provide enough relief. Conventional knee replacement has been performed for many years and remains an established treatment option for suitable patients. What Is Robotic Assisted Knee Replacement? In robotic assisted knee replacement, the surgeon uses a robotic-assisted system to help plan the procedure and guide bone preparation and implant positioning. The process may involve creating a detailed plan based on the patient’s knee anatomy. During surgery, the system provides information and guidance that can help the surgeon make adjustments according to the treatment plan. One important thing to understand is that the robot does not perform the operation independently. The surgeon remains in control and makes the clinical decisions throughout the procedure. Robotic Knee Replacement vs Conventional: Key Differences Both procedures aim to replace damaged parts of the…
